Microsoft's statement on the impact of the Coronavirus suggests Xbox remains unaffected
Microsoft has released an update on their expectations for this quarter of the financial year due to concerns around the COVID-19 Coronavirus. The impact of the Coronavirus is having a detrimental affect on Windows, but it seems that Xbox should remain unaffected.
"As Microsoft closely monitors the impact of the COVID-19 health emergency, our top priority remains the health and safety of our employees, customers, partners, and communities", the statement reads. Microsoft mentions that in their last earnings call, they included "quarterly revenue guidance for our More Personal Computing segment between $10.75 and $11.15 billion, which included a wider than usual range to reflect uncertainty related to the public health situation in China." They say that demand for Windows is as expected, but that the supply chain "is returning to normal operations at a slower pace than anticipated at the time of our Q2 earnings call. As a result, for the third quarter of fiscal year 2020, we do not expect to meet our More Personal Computing segment guidance as Windows OEM and Surface are more negatively impacted than previously anticipated." However, Microsoft also says that "All other components of our Q3 guidance remain unchanged." This implies that they're not having any trouble with Xbox. Although they won't be shipping their Xbox Series X until the Holiday period of this year, the fact that they don't seem to be expecting any trouble with Xbox is promising, especially since they must already be deep in development on their next-gen console; it also suggests they don't have concerns about their future Xbox plans.
As it stands, more than 80,000 people in over 40 countries have been infected with the Coronavirus, according to the BBC. Just recently, CD Projekt Red and PUBG Corp employees decided to drop out of PAX East visits due to concerns about the virus. "As the conditions evolve, Microsoft will act to ensure the health and safety of our employees, customers, and partners during this difficult period", Microsoft's statement continues. "We will also continue to partner with local and global health authorities to provide additional assistance. We deeply appreciate the commitment of the people and organizations that have united to address this health emergency; our thoughts are with all those affected across the world."
